The sophistication that makes the best recent kids’ films work both for parents and children alike—the mix of topical references, catchy songs, bright dialogue, sharp plotting, and most of all a sense of wonder and fun—finds its template in "The Muppet Movie", unbelievably celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
Something of an origin story for how Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and all the rest of the Muppet gang came together, the film features a rather disorienting array of cameos from the hip and the old-timey alike, bridging generations with the likes of Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Orson Welles, Bob Hope, Elliot Gould, and countless others. The films also features unbelievable music by Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher, including “The Rainbow Connection,” a song that was instantly timeless from the moment people first heard its twanging banjo introduction.
For those who have kids and for those who don’t, "The Muppet Movie" is that rare movie that really is for everyone—the lovers, the dreamers, and you.
