“My friends say you’re so lucky to be married to a poet,” says Elsie, the wife of Slam Poetry guru Shihan. “Yeah, but I’m still here picking up his socks and shirts.” Realism balances artistic inspiration in Rotimi Rainwater’s documentary, which follows several posses of poets as they scribble, practice and get manicures in preparation for the Nationals. In the last decade, Slam has become scored like Oympic figure skating, but as fans like Woody Harrelson attest on camera, its expressionism remains raw and immediate.
