This dazzling time capsule of mid-60s Paris stars Jean-Pierre Léaud and Chantal Goya as an intellectual boy and a yé yé girl swept up into a ferment of youth, sex, politics and Americanized pop culture. Godard presents their mutual coming-of-age and fragmented love story against a vérité background of dingy cafés, discotheques, bowling alleys and, of course, Left Bank movie houses. Masculine Feminine captures Godard at his most accessible and playful “children of Marx and Coca-Cola” moment before his radical “Dziga Vertov” turn.
