Following a series of murders in a Greek seaside town, a police officer, a photographer and a hotel maid reenact the crimes with an acute, almost obsessive, attention to detail. Any pretense of solving the crimes disappears as the trio of eccentrics reveals the desires that secretly plague them all through their ritualistic power plays. With minimal dialogue and a hand-held camera, director Yorgos Lanthimos keeps his characters at a distance — from the audience and each other — making their abstract, at times perverse, behavior a fearless and provocative study of human longing and loneliness.
